THE GAVIOTA SPORTFISHING FLEET AND FISH CABO FLEET
The yellowfin tuna bite was the action fish of the week and 99% of
the catch was between Cabo Falso to Migrino and within a couple miles
of the beach. However, the billfish bite remains almost non-existent
and for the first time in a number of years, we had a zero billfish
count for the entire week. This is hard to imagine when one looks at
the water temps and water clarity, which are both favorable and
appearing perfect. The overall fish counts for 14 combined offshore
fishing days reflected 56 yellowfin tuna, (to 41 lbs.) 1 Sierra, 1
Wahoo and 6 dorado.
Late information: Just got off the telephone with Captain Roberto
Marquez, owner of the FISH CABO FLEET, and he told me that the "TUNA
TIME" baited eleven stripers yesterday and had two bites, but nothing
that "stuck" to the hook, while fishing the IGFA Offshore World
Championship Tournament. Most interesting was the proximity of the
fishing which was about a mile from the Marina and just inside &
outside the fishing preserve line at Cabo San Lucas, which is being
vigorously patrolled by the Navy. Roberto said the area was full of
life, including wahoo and yellowfin tuna in addition to the billfish,
but all they can do now is wait for the fish to cross the line. He
added, "It's very frustrating to know the fish are there and you
can't pursue them, especially since the the fishing has been so
incredibly slow for so long". He's hoping that this is the beginning
of the change for Cabo and that those fish will be crossing the line
shortly and back to fair game for the anglers.
Cabo Climate: Sunny and clear with warm days, temps from 68 nights
to 92 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: The Pacific side remains coolish with temps at
69-71. A temp break at Cabo Falso, rising to 76 degrees and
increasing to 79-80 from Chileno and into the Sea of Cortez, all with
excellent glarity and favorable fishing conditions.
Best Fishing Area: Continues to be on the lower Pacific side from
Cabo Falso to Migrino.
Best Lure/Bait: Cedar p[lugs and feathers working best for the
yellowfin
Live Bait Supply: Excellent and abundant.
