Another fairly quiet week at LakeSabrina and we're thinking that the winter of 2010 will never end. Three more days with snow flying thru the canyon. This weekend - gorgeous, but it looks like Mother Nature just isn't done with winter - more on that later. Len and Ginny started this week (YIP-PEE), so come on in and introduce yourselves.
Catching, this week, is still doing good. Fishing the front part of the lake with Salmon Eggs, NightCrawlers or Crickets (pick up those in Bishop) on a bobber is the ticket, but this area is getting hit hard. The same baits are working also at the DingleBerry Inlet, but a whole lot better as not that many anglers are venturing to the back. The ice on the back natural lake is looking darker and darker and it looks like a bit of water showing at the Little George and George Inlets. JUST WATCH WHERE YOU WALK - WATCH OUT FOR THOSE ICE SHELVES.
The lake is coming up slowly. Rick and Len even got a boat on the lake Friday - it can't go far, but at least it's in the water. We had a couple of nights that didn't hit the freezing mark, but we've had a few nights that were just down-right cold (our water pump froze in the 5th-wheel). The temps are forecasted to drop again Monday and Tuesday with - you guessed it - another chance of snow Tuesday, but then we'll be back up in the low 50s. Not sure if there is something coming in over next weekend, but you can check www.weather.gov and enter ASPENDELL, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather or check in with Howard at www.MammothWeather.com.
The following campgrounds are open in the Bishop Creek Canyon - Bishop Park, BitterBrush, Big Trees, Four Jeffery and the Forks. The price this year to camp at the Forestry campgrounds are $21.00. The only USFS campground that accepts reservations is Four Jeffery. There 31 sites available for reservations: you can book on-line at www.recreation.gov or call 1-877-444-6777. All other campsites at Four Jeffery and the other campgrounds are first come, first served. There is a full hook-up RV campground - Creekside RV park which is on the road to South Lake.
The roads to North Lake and South Lake are still impassable due to snow and ice. But there are new residents under the bridge at the North Lake road - beavers and what a new home they have built. Stop by and take a peek.
Still haven't heard of anyone this year going thru the ice - yet, but as the weather warms, please be careful - also, remember your polarized dark glasses and sunscreen - we saw a few anglers that looked a bit like cooked lobster. You've got that sun coming at you in ALL directions and the rays from the snow are deadly! Also, remember when after applying sunscreen, bug juice or any other FOO-FOO juice, WASH YOUR HANDS! The juice you apply will taint your tackle and bait. You know it tastes yucky, the fish think it tastes yucky, too, although have you ever tasted PowerBait or Worms - to each their own.
