SPECTRA DEVELOPER GETS BEST FISH (102210)!!! Roy Rose took 20 anglers on a ten-day trip to The Ridge and The Rocks, returning the Royal Polaris to Fisherman's Landing October 22. The fish were plentiful, and they were large. The best Tuna was caught by one of the original developers of the Spectra material used by nearly all long rangers these days. Former department head at University of Massachusetts, Shaw Ling Hsu of Sunderland, MA teaches polymer science and engineering at U Mass. He used a sardine under the kite to bag a 108.4-pound Yellowfin, his first 100-pounder. Shaw was a member of the team that developed Spectra, the high-strength backing and fishing line of choice for many modern anglers. The material was also widely used in other applications like hang glider sails and boat sails, where low stretch and high strength are needed. "I was a developer of Spectra for Allied Signal back in 1977," Hsu told dock reporter Bill Roecker. "I saw this fish boil on my bait. Crewman John Collins was a help to me, and I got my Tuna up to the boat on the starboard stern." Numerous larger tuna were caught at Alijos Rocks, and then Rose took his RP anglers in to the Thetis Bank, where they found some wild Wahoo fishing. "It was the first 100-fish day in a long time," remarked Rose. Don Asbury of La Mesa won first place for a 96-pound Yellowfin. He left early, so skipper Rose posed with his fish and with Adrian Montague's 55.2-pound Yellowtail, best of the trip. Dave Hensley of Ontario won second place for a 79-pound Tuna, a fish he said he got with a sardine on a 4/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 50-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon, 50-pound Izorline and 80-pound Line One Spectra. He fished with an Avet LX reel and a Seeker 6470 rod. Ken Leverich of Costa Mesa won third place for a 75-pound Tuna. Adrian Montague of New York City not only had the trip's best Yellowtail, he got the best Wahoo, a 70.4-pounder, and posed with it in the lineup shot with Hensley, Hsu and Rose following one the best trips south so far this season.
