The Joseph & Cosmos charter saw good wahoo action at Hurricane Bank, and scratch fishing on tuna at the Buffer Zone. The trip had five tuna over two hundred pounds, including one 300-pounder.
Jackpot winner Cheng Liu of Oceanside saw his big fish weigh 312 pounds at H&M Landing's certified scales. Cheng fished a salami on an 8/0 Mustad hook, 130-pound Izorline mono, 130-pound Izorline spectra, an Accurate 50 reel, and a Phenix rod.
K.J. Song of Los Angeles won second place for a 228-pound tuna. K.J. fished a salami on 9/0 Owner circle hook, 130-pound Izorline, 130-pound Jerry Brown spectra, a Penn 50 reel, and a Calstar rod. K.J. also caught a 213-pound tuna.
Chartermaster Joseph Cho of Fontana won third place with a 220-pound yellowfin. Joseph fished a mackerel on a 10/0 Mustad hook, 130-pound Izorline mono, 130-pound Jerry Brown Hollow spectra, a Penn 80 reel, and a Super Seeker rod.
"I thought it was a shark," Joseph said. "It never acted like a tuna, it came right to the boat. Probably the easiest tuna I've ever caught."
Tony Postolov of Venice caught a 201-pound yellowfin. Tony fished a big mackerel on a 7/0 Mustad hook, 130-pound Izorline, 130-pound Jerry Brown spectra, an Accurate 80 reel, and a custom rod.
"The wahoo at Hurricane Bank were bigger than you normally see there," skipper Andy Cates said as he weighed a couple 50-pound skinnies, the biggest one going 56.8-pounds. "We also got a couple cows there too."
