Lake Oroville water levels

Steve Carson

Report Date:

Plenty of water in Lake Oroville raises a few questions from anglers as to future lake level plans. Julie Brown, the Department of Water Resources biologist for Lake Oroville said, "The plan is to store as much water as we can in Lake Oroville while still meeting our requirements for flood control, water deliveries, and environmental compliance. DWR does not manage the Lake Oroville water levels for the fishery in the lake, but DWR takes other actions to benefit the fishery such as stocking coho salmon, as well as improving the warm water fish habitat on an annual basis.

"At this [water] level, DWR is co-coordinating with the Army Corps of Engineers to manage for flood control. The water levels are primarily a reflection of the amount of precipitation that we receive, and when we receive it. So far, things are really looking good this year to have a full lake by June. The high water releases to the Feather River is good for the ecosystem as this is the natural condition of the river during this time of year."
