Report Date:
http://www.cortezcharters.comOn March 19, 2011, the day of the full moon, the corvina bite from
Mazatlan was reportedly one of the best bites for the big croaker
ever reported from the area. According to Geronimo Cevallos, the
bite was as good as it gets for this close cousin to the white
seabass and the sizes were nearly all quality sized fish, mostly in
the 20-39 lb. ranges. It was a phenomenal, unprecedented bite and by
the end of the day, all of the boats fishing the area wound up with
10 or more of these fabulous eating fish. Then, just a day following
the full moon, the fish all but disappeared and the numbers had
dwindled to just one or two per boat and some boats with none at
all. The old adage, "You should have been here yesterday" was never
more appropriate. Since the day of the full moon, only 5 corvina
have been reported. The overall combined fish counts for 6 offshore
fishing days reflected 2 stripers, 2 sailfish, 2 mako shark and 4
dorado. The inshore fish counts for 8 days fished reflected 5
corvina, (all in the 20-35 lb. range) 1 Sierra, 18 jack cravelle,
(18-24 lbs.) 11 pargo and 1 mako shark.
Mazatlan Climate:
Mostly sunny, warm days with a few passing
clouds. Cool evenings & nights with temps at 52 degrees and rising
to 83 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions:
Warming up! 71 degrees inshore and rising to 73-74
offshore at about 10 miles, out to the south of the Marina El Cid.
Best Fishing Area:
No offshore concentrations have built up, yet,
but with the warmer current, we could see changes at any time.
Best Bait/Lure:
Rigged baits best for the offshore waters and Rapala
Magnums, especially the silver/black with the red face, has been
enormously productive for the corvina and the jack cravelle.
Bait Supply:
Good supply of both, live bait and dead, rigged baits.
