Andy Cates returned Red Rooster III to her berth at H&M Landing August 28 following a seven-day Izorline trip with owner Steve Ichinokuchi aboard, along with 18 other anglers. Cates reported the day before: "So far today has worked out with Bluefin, Yellowfin and a couple of Albacore. Things have changed with flat calm weather and all day drifts. The start of the stop was wide open and then tapered off to a pick. You get flurries on fish as you drift. Light line is best with 25 and 30-pound line with Seaguar flourocarbon. The fish are small so a small hook works out as well. We are going to drift until 300 and then head it for home. Hopefully we can get a few more hits. "Epic yellowfin fishing in the afternoon," he reported later. "We drove away from them and headed home; an epic ending of a great trip."

Cates told Roecker, "We got our trophies at The Rocks. Fishing was good on The Ridge, and prospects for tuna look good between there and Punta Eugenia, maybe on the same fish that were on the Petrel Bank earlier. Yesterday we had near-limits on tuna of combined species."

Paul Oster of Mammoth Lakes won first place and the Izorline Trophy for a 109-pound yellowfin. He said it came to him after biting a sardine on a 3/0 ringed Owner Mutu hook tied to 40-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader. He used 40-pound Izorline and 80-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate 665 reel and a Calstar 760 ML rod.

Ceasar Requindin of San Marcos won second place and the Coveted Trolling Jacket for a 99-pound tuna and one a great deal smaller, about 14 pounds. Mike Hobbick of Fullerton won third place for a 98.2-pound tuna.

Mike said he had thrown his very expensive, foreign-made reel into the water after its drag system failed on the one fish. It was still attached to the rod, he said, because the nuts holding it were locked jam-tight. "I wrote a letter about my feelings to the company," he stated.
