"We got 'em all on regular stuff," he told dock reporter Bill Roecker. "None of your Gucci gear, just a good old Mustad bait hook and Izorline; no fluorocarbon or ringed hooks or any of that."
Dave Covert of Phoenix won first place for a 44.1-pound bluefin he got with a sardine on a 4/0 Mustad hook and 40-pound Izorline on a seeker Black Steel 6470 with an Avet reel.
Matthew Campbell of Calgary, AB, Canada was just a tick behind Covert. He got a 44-pound bluefin with a rig belonging to the boat: 4/0 Mustad hook, 40-pound Izorline, Penn 4/0 reel and a Seeker 670 rod. Jeff Jackson of Chandler, AZ won third place for a 43.4-pound bluefin.
