Shogun docked at Fisherman's Landing December 8 when skipper Norm Kagawa brought his 23 anglers home from a 13-day trip to the Hurricane Bank. The three cows aboard swept the jackpots, but there was more to the story.

First place went to Jim Bowman of San Diego for his 212-pounder. He said it ate a chunk on a 7/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook. He used 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Izorline spectra on a Tiagra 30 W reel and a Black Steel Seeker 6463 XXXXH rod. Bowman's story continued beyond the big tuna. He told dock reporter Bill Roecker he also got three tuna from 155 to 182 pounds on jigs, Salas PL-68 jigs he'd rescued and repainted with white glow; a difficult achievement.

Ken Bowman of Ewa beach, HI won second place for a 206-pound yellowfin he bagged with a sardine on a 7/0 ringed Super Mutu on 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Izorline, on a Penn 30 W reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. "It took an hour and 40 minutes," he said, "and he's my best fish. We had to get him off the anchor line."

Robb Kolb of Garden Grove took third place for a 200-pound tuna that ate a live skipjack on a 10/0 Mustad 7691 hook. He used 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra on a Tiagra 50 W reel and a Calstar 770 H rod to catch his first cow.

The next-biggest fish was caught by Mel North of Buena Park, a 193-pound yellowfin tuna. Joe Pfister made an appearance, and chartermaster Brian Porter made the award for the best Seeker-caught fish. Shogun is in for Christmas.
