Anglers are catching some nice fish at Lake Almanor, reported Doug Neal at Almanor Fishing Adventures. "This was the driest December in a decade", said Neal. "Only 0.32 inches of precipitation, with around 5 inches being average. Average mornings are around 26 degrees. Later on, excellent sunshine with spring-like conditions have anglers hitting the shores and trolling lanes. Even the bugs think its spring.

"Fish are scattered all over the lake chasing smelt, with a mix of browns, rainbows, and a few salmon being caught. Lake Cove has been the best trolling area for us. Geritol Cove and Canyon Dam have been best for bait anglers. Some limits of planters have been caught by 8:30 AM.

"At Rec. #2, rainbows and browns are just outside the log boom. Row or salmon eggs right on the bottom, leave the bail open and just wait for them to pick it up. Also try suspended crawlers about three to five feet off the bottom. Some big fish are also hitting baits at Prattville Towers, Hamilton Branch, A-Frame, and Big Springs.

"Most boats are averaging five or six fish, with many over three pounds. Hammered nickel or red/gold Speedy Shiners with Pro-Cure Trophy Trout Super Gel added were our best trolling lures.

Neal added, "The Canyon Dam public ramp is open with dock; USFS ramp open, but no dock; Hamilton Branch private ramp open, no dock; LACC Rec. area #1 and #2 open, with docks; Plumas Pines, Knotty Pines ramps closed for the season."
