http://www.fishingvideos.comA 50-pound halibut now moves into first place for the best of its kind brought into San Diego aboard a long range boat. The fish arrived aboard Norm Kagawa's Shogun June 22 after a five-day trip with 21 anglers.
"I just made a cast for yellowtail with a sardine," said Frank Withee of Anaheim (no relation to Point Loma's Lance Withee), and I got a bird's nest, and while I was working on it I got hit. I thought it was the rocks, but it shook its head like a lazy yellowtail."
Five minutes later Frank had the whopper flatfish up to the boat. It weighed 50.2-pounds on the certified scales at Fisherman's Landing. Frank said he used a 4/0 Mustad hook, 30-pound Ande line and an eight-foot rod of uncertain make.
Steve Walker of Lodi won second place for a 47.8-pound yellowtail and Stanford Parks of Oxnard got a 33.1-pound yellow, good for third place.
