https://tomloe.com/The Upper Owens continues to kick out some bigs but you will have to cover alot of water and work very hard to get their attention. The numbers have really dropped off here as Crowley is warming and ice free making it a more attractive area for the fish to feed. Nymphing has been the ticket using combinations of SJ worms, roe patterns, bird's nest and flashback PT's, broken back midges, and crystal caddis larva patterns #14-20. There is a decent emergence of BWO's between 1-2 pm, look for the fish rising in the larger pools. The weather is gonna get nasty this week and even get worse by the following weekend so this may not be a good choice as a fly fishing destination until the winds calm down. Access remains good on the east side road with no mud or ice currently.
The photo above is of John Whitaker who fished with Sierra Drifters on the Upper Owens and caught this beautiful rainbow on the fly.
Photo #1: James Johnson caught this fat spring rainbow while fly fishing with Sierra Drifters recently on the Upper Owens River.
