The weeks leading up to our SFR charter on the Dreamer were spent looking at the counts every day with anticipation and excitement. As each day passed I got more and more anxious; all I could do was hope and wish for a good trip. Finally, our SFR charter on the Dreamer was here! When I boarded the Dreamer on June 24th I met our charter group: Michael (Chad's brother-in-law), Masaaki (along with his buddy), George and Wayne, finally Joe Llanes. I gave each passenger a Fish Trap blue and white jig and Rod Wrap as part of SFR's charter giveaways. After greeting my charter group I met our Captain Allyn Watson, the one and only "Dr. Seabass" himself, 2nd Capt Marcus, and our deckhand, Casey. Once everyone was onboard and ready to go we left the dock at 10pm and headed out to the bait receiver. Marcus told us that we are going to bait up and head for San Clemente Island. On the way to the bait receiver everybody was exchanging opinions regarding how to set up their rigs in addition to sharing past fishing experiences. While we were rigging up we were instructed by Casey that we should be fishing at least 30 or 40lb test???in other words NO LIGHT LINE. Both bait tanks were loaded with live Squid and off we went. When we arrived at SCI we parked at the Pyramid Cove and settled for the night. There were several cattle boats around; I could see at least 3 or 4. We got up at around 5 am and everybody anxious to start fishing. The action began around 6:30am when Joe Llanes got the first hook up; unfortunately the fish came unbuttoned. Joe however was the hot stick with 2 White Seabass and 2 Yellowtail. Masaaki did well too and ended up with limits of White Seabass(3). There was action all day for everybody; it wasn't a wide open bite, but there always seemed to be at least one or two people hooked into a fish. Michael caught a decent Calico Bass that looked to be in the 6 to 8lb class in addition to a 25 lbs White Seabass. Needless to say he was a happy camper. Aside from the White Seabass and Yellowtail we caught lots of good sized Calico Bass. The key on this trip was to use the heavy gear. I used my Trinidad 20 spooled with Spectra and short leader of 30lb Seaguar Flouro. That combo did the trick as it cut through the kelp. I can't say enough good things about Captain Allyn Watson. He gave me some pointers and whammo!, I caught one right away. He's definitely an expert! You should see all the boats that tried to get close to us because of his reputation. He is a living legend. I would like thank Captain Allyn Watson, Marcus & Casey for a wonderful successful trip. We did it. Fish total on this trip: 13 White Seabass (up to 30 lbs), 6 Yellowtail(up to 20 lbs), and about 50 nice size Calico for 6 happy Anglers. This was my first time on the Dreamer and I had a great time. Take it from me, everyone should and fish with these guys at least once, it will be a trip you'll never forget!
