The recent Sportfishingreport.com charter aboard the Pacific Dawn was a big success with yellow fin tuna, Bluefin tuna, yellowtail and Dorado all getting hooked and landed by one of the 15 lucky anglers aboard for our recent offshore adventure. Captain Pat Cavaughn was at the helm of the Pac Dawn, with crew members Mike, Chris, Kirstin, Fernando and Kenny on hand to attend to the all of the anglers needs. We left the docks at 10 pm and overnight travel saw us on the fishing grounds shortly after daybreak. Jigs were quickly positioned in the wake behind the boat and crewmen with binoculars headed to the crow's nest to start scanning for drifting kelp paddies. We spent the day catching fish on single, double, triple and quadruple jig strikes, by throwing bait following jig strikes, trolling past smaller kelp paddies, stopping and drifting on bigger kelp paddies and by throwing bait and circling on meter marks. Some stops produced a handful of fish while several stops saw 20-30 fish hit the fish box before moving on. A quick snap on the Bluefin tuna saw 6 or seven quality short fin find the gaff before the school sank off. Flurocarbon leaders generously provided by Seaguar helped anglers get hooked up and hooks provided by Owner Hooks helped anglers stay hooked up. Steady action throughout the day resulted in over a hundred tuna and dorado as well as numerous smaller yellowtail hitting the hold by the time the sun faded below the horizon. An excellent day of fishing!!!!! Day 2 saw Captain Cavaughn move the Pacific Dawn closer to home overnight before setting out at daylight in search of a monster kelp paddy reportedly holding a huge school of fish. With several boats already on the spot Captain Jodie Morgan aboard the Voyager was gracious enough to allow us to slide in close and get in on the steady action. We spent the morning pulling on yellow fin, Dorado and yellowtail and were able to put together a nice score of fish before mother time dictated that it was time to head for the harbor. Total fish count for the trip was 104 yellow fin tuna, 6 Bluefin tuna, 24 Dorado, 74 yellowtail a handful of skipjack tuna and numerous yellowtail released for the fifteen anglers aboard.
