Joe Chait, owner-skipper of the charter boat Pegasus has been fishing the local albacore for several weeks. On July 18 at Fisherman's Landing, Joe gave his thoughts on what's going on.

"There's two areas of fish," noted Joe, "about 15 miles apart. The lower area, about 50 miles from port, bites in the early morning. Later in the day, the boats work north. The upper area bites in the afternoon, from about four to eight p.m.

"The albies are running 20 to 30 pounds, mostly," added Chait. "There's lots of small bait around, the water's at 66 degrees and there's a cold edge out to the west.

"We've got both sardines and anchovies for bait. They're biting the sardines just fine, so you don't have to fish the anchovies. You don't need any special tackle or techniques," concluded skipper Chait. "When they're biting, they don't care; they bite on the 25 and they bite the 40-pound line."
