"After a day of offshore feast and famine," wrote American Angler skipper Brian Kiyohara June 24, "we decided to try our hand at catching some yellows. When we got to the area in the morning, the birds were already hard at work. They made it very easy to determine where the fish were and left it up to us to figure out how to capitalize on the situation. We promptly dropped the anchor and proceeded to keep 3 to 8 fish hooked for several hours. The bonus of the whole picture was that the grade of fish was between 18 and 30 pounds as well as the visual display of aggressive feeding behavior."

At Pt. Loma Sportfishing June 27, Kiyohara said, "The good quality we got shows you don't have to take big numbers of fish for the anglers to have a good time."

The mixed catch of yellowtail, bluefin, yellowfin and albacore was topped by the only yellowfin taken at Guadalupe Island.

Charles Reynolds of Los Alamitos won first place for a 47-pound tuna he bagged in the calm lee of the island after a 40-minute tussle.

He said it bit a sardine on a 3/0 ringed Mutu hook. He fished with 25-pound P-Line on an Accurate 270 reel and a seven-foot Calstar rod.

Don Garcia of Long Beach was second, for a 40.6-pound bluefin, and John Yarbrough of Parker, AZ was third, for a 39.5-pound yellowtail. Chad Schwartz of Corona turned 16 on the trip, and his birthday present was a 30-pound yellowtail he got with a sardine on 30-pound line. He posed with his big forkie and the winners.
