Southern Nevada's young hunters will have waterfowl hunting to themselves during a youth-only waterfowl season scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 19.

The special hunt is set for the Moapa Valley portion of the Overton Wildlife Management Area. The daily bag limits for ducks, geese and other waterfowl are same as those established for the regular season. The season is open only to hunters 15 years of age and younger, including non-residents, who must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years old.

"There is no application or draw for this special hunt," said Doug Nielsen outdoor education supervisor for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW). However reservations for blinds are required and will be accepted starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 14 at NDOW offices at 4747 Vegas Drive in Las Vegas and 744 S. Racetrack Rd. in Henderson as well as the Overton WMA. The hunter, or their representative, must appear in person to make the reservation.

"This hunt is the perfect chance for an adult to share their passion for the outdoors while introducing a young hunter to hunting and the heritage associated with it," Nielsen added. Youth hunters between the ages of 12 and 15 will need a current hunting license with a Nevada state duck stamp, but will not need a federal Migratory Game Bird Hunting stamp. That stamp is required for persons ages 16 and older who hunt migratory waterfowl. Youth hunters under the age of twelve are not required to possess any license; however a hunter education course is strongly recommended prior to the hunt. Information on hunter education courses can be found on the Department's website at www.ndow.org. The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) protects, restores and manages fish and wildlife, and promotes fishing, hunting, and boating safety. NDOW's wildlife and habitat conservation efforts are primarily funded by sportsmen's license and conservation fees and a federal surcharge on hunting and fishing gear. Support wildlife and habitat conservation in Nevada by purchasing a hunting, fishing or combination license. Find us on Facebook, Twitter or visit us at www.ndow.org.
