Chartermaster Fred Bowden enjoyed his trip on the Red Rooster III with skipper Andy Cates, taking the fourth-place 64-pound yellowfin at Guadalupe Island before the boat headed inshore to fish yellowtail.

"It was pretty hard to fish on the inside," said skipper Cates at H&M Landing August 20, "because we found 25 knots of wind there."

Paul Suter of Sedalia, CO won first place. He took a 71.3-pound yellowfin on a sardine and a Mustad 1/0 hook. He fished with the new 35-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader on 40-pound P-Line, he said, with 50-pound Spectra backing on an Accurate 665 reel.

"I got spooled three times," said Paul, "and he fought me for 45 minutes."

Jerrad Dobson of San Marcos, TX won second place for a 69-pound tuna, and Mike Small of Lakeside was third, for a 66.6-pounder.
