Shogun Seeker/Soft Steel Success

"We had good yellowtail action at the North End of Cedros Island," said Shogun skipper Norm Kagawa at Fisherman's Landing August 21, and then we spent a couple of days at the big island.

"We paid a heavy tax to Whitey on the one full day we were there," he continued, "but the rest of the time it wasn't too bad. One time he came up and breached three times on the same fish."

Chartermaster Joe Pfister was aboard, and got one of the better fish, along with a half-dozen others. His tuna had the length but not the girth needed to place in the top three.

"I fished with the seven-foot 6470 rod" said Joe, "and used 3/0 Mustad Demon ringed hooks from Burns, 40-pound Soft Steel, fluorocarbon and a two-speed reel. That seemed to work pretty good. I think all the big fish came on fluorocarbon leaders."

Jimmie Woo of Diamond Bar won first place, and the Seeker trophy for the best fish taken on a Seeker rod.

"He fought hard," Woo said. "He weighed 109.8 pounds, and he bit on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook, 50-pound Izorline with 60-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon, an Avet Pro EX 30 reel and a Seeker 660 rod."

Dan Morrison of Mission Viejo won second place for a 101-pounder, and Joe Arimitsu of Simi Valley was third, for a 98.2-pound yellowfin tuna.
