We were on the 2nd day of a 2 day trip on the boat Holiday out of Point Loma Sportfishing on Sunday August 5th. 2007.We had just hit our last paddy of the day and the captain waited about 5 minutes to make sure we had fished it out (we only caught 1 fish on it), when he decided to call it quits and head in. At the time my 13 year old son had dropped down about 500 to 600 feet with a green heavy jig when he heard the "reel ???em on in" over the loudspeaker. So my son, Tanner, starts cranking as hard as he could and after a few seconds something pulls really hard on the jig.
"After a 35 minute struggle and no help from anyone else, he pulls a giant opah over the rail. The fish weighs about 79 pounds (after being bled) and bags the $300 jackpot by over 50 pounds. He used an Avet left-handed LX6/3 two speed with 40 pound mono.
He also caught a yellowfin, yellowtail, albacore and a dorado; no adult fisherman even came close to catching him. That's Tanner Iwamura on the left and deck hand Nick Dalo on the right."
