Roy Rose skippered 36 anglers on the Fujimoto Charter to Guadalupe Island, where they fished on the anchor for their five-day trip, taking a very good catch of yellowfin tuna. Three marlin were hooked during the fishing. One popped off and two were released, said Roy.

"One of ???em made a bunch of jumps right across everybody's lines," said Roy. "He tore through the spread, but he never got tangled.

"We did best with 40 and 50-pound line and fluorocarbon leaders," he added, "and little circle hooks."

On August 19, the first fishing day, Roy wrote, "Today was a great day of scratch fishing at Frank's favorite island. We kept three to six fish going pretty much all day. The fish were 45 to 55 pounds on the average, with a few stand-outs in the 80 to 90-pound range. We also had 19 yellowtail up to 40 pounds."

Colin Nakano of Torrance won first place, for a 105-pound tuna he bagged with a sardine on a 4/0 Super Mutu hook on 60-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader. He said he fished with 80-pound Izorline Spectra, a Trinidad 40 reel and a Calstar 700 XH rod.

"His first run just about spooled me," remarked Colin.

Bob Fisher of Redondo Beach was second, for a 96-pounder, and chartermaster Keith Fujimoto of Mission Viejo won third place for an 82.8-pound yellowfin tuna. Carlo Grijalva of Lincoln Heights stood in with the winners with his 40-pound yellowtail.
