http://www.virginialakesresort.comThe weather has finally cooled down and the bite has improved somewhat. DFG stocked some really nice size rainbows this past week, and I heard my first gun shot this morning so remember to take off your antlers while fishing the lakes. It's been breezy for about 3 days with a 30.9 7am temperature today. Little Virginia has been doing well on streamers at about 4-6 feet with most trout holding around 5 feet. Soft hackles, olive bird's nest, prince nymphs, black olive and cinnamon wooly buggers, Carey specials, small caddis, but most of all the Eric Leisenring spider. Small dries had been working early and late prior to the temperature change, either a light Cahill, or light Hendrickson or #16 PMD, of course trout at this elevation are as fickle as ladies at a hat sale. Of course, I'm force feeding them with Grey Hackle Peacocks off the sunken boat area near the outlet, and we are all having a great time. Crawlers floated with a marshmallow, salmon eggs on a single egg hook or #20 treble hook and cast to China, pink or red power worms, and trout juice on just about anything that will take the scent. Lures that have done well are the gold/red Bouyant, Spin a Lure in gold/red dots, ?? oz gold/red hot shot, small silver phoebe's, and some nice minnow sized Rapala's. Joe Cervantes of Ventura caught a nice 4lb 3oz Alpers on salmon peach power bait. I did lake bottom mapping of Little Virginia and saw some nice trout, even a few trophy browns cruising the diner. Trumbull has been fair, but those who work the hardest will get into fish with either crawlers or salmon eggs. Some tubers have done well but it's the time of day and the temperature that will determine the bite. Big Virginia has done the best due to the size of the lake and temp of the water. Lures, flies and crawlers have been at the top of the list, but the odd bait combination will also take some nice fish. DFG put in a lot of really good size trout last week with some topping out at 2lbs. Backcountry has started to slow down with the exception of Blue Lake around 4-6pm daily.
