Special 2006-2007 Turkey Hunts Scheduled at Lake Sonoma

Hunts scheduled for the 2006-07 season at Lake Sonoma include wild turkey hunts sponsored by the Department of Fish and Game (DFG), and wild pig archery and crossbow hunts sponsored by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps). Wild pig hunt information is available from the Corps at (707) 433-9483, extension 20. Turkey hunt schedules and drawing information follows.

2006-2007 Turkey Hunts: There are four two-day turkey hunts scheduled during the 2006-07 season. Two hunts are scheduled for fall 2006, and two hunts for spring 2007.

Ten hunters will be drawn for each hunt, and each hunter can take one hunting guest. Junior hunters must possess a junior hunting license, and can take either another licensed junior hunter or a licensed adult hunter. A non-hunting adult must accompany two junior hunters.

DFG must receive all applications in the Yountville Regional Office by 5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006. The drawing will be held on Friday, Oct. 20, 2006.

The drawing will be held on Friday, March 9, 2007.

Applicants may apply for only one weekend in each season. Submit a standard size postcard (one name per card) with name, address, telephone number, hunting license number, and hunt day requested. Successful applicants will be notified by mail. Send applications to:

The two-day turkey hunts for 2005-06 resulted in 54 hunters taking nine wild turkeys, with an overall success rate of 17 percent. Twenty-five junior hunters took four turkeys for a 16 percent success rate, and 29 adult hunters took five turkeys for a 17 percent success rate. Heavy fall rains resulted in lower hunter pressure and success. These hunts remain very popular with hunters.
