It was a weird week for fishing here at Del Valle, iwth temperamental weather. Winds have been blowing all week making it hard to slow down and fish in most areas. It's during this windy early spring season when a trolling motor is worth it's weight in gold, allowing you to remain stationary while you fish even in the wind. Most fishermen like me don't use or own a trolling motor can attack this "wind Issue" from another angle. Drift fishing is a signature river style fishing for salmon and steelhead but, we use the wind to push us down rock walls and beaches as if we were in the river. Instead of drifting bait, we use jerkbaits, crankbaits, rattle traps, and any fast moving lure so you can fish ahead of your drift and cover much more water. A few anglers were able to tuck out of the wind and land trout on powerbait. Other trout were caught trolling Panther martins out in the bays. We are seeing less and less trout as the water warms up. On that note, striped bass are eating less anchovies in the narrows and bays as well. Pretty soon they will be chasing shad on the surface and those exciting morning boils will start happening. My good friend Doctor Al Hurwitz came out fishing again and wrote me another report for this lake. On 3-26-15, Al Hurwitz of Saratoga and Abbey Lev of Sunnyvale trolled all day in all sections of the lake at all depths and with a wide varietyof lures. No Bites. There were a few fish seen on the fish finder. The water level was up presumably due to Delta water influx up by the dam. There was considerable algae in the lake. I suspect that the fish were either in very deep water and/or at the extreme backs of coves. I spoke with a number of trollers, and none were having any luck. Bett7er fishing is likely to be at the Southern end away from the Delta water influx, where the water quality is better. Bait fishing with live or synthetic baits is likely to be more successful than trolling. Obviously, we need more rain! Hopefully, once the algae and salinity stabilizes, trllers will do better.

Another week of Monster Rianbows being pulled out of the Lake. Water temperature rose to almost 60 degrees this week, making the Trout seek deeper colder water which has more oxygen in it. I.m starting to find this elusive giants out in Swallow Bay and Heron Bay on the rocky points about 10-15 ft deep. Last week they were sitting about 5-10 feet. As the water temperature keeps climbing up we are going to start fishing deeper for these......

The Lake is sitting at 54 degrees but the visibility has dropped to about 5 feet or less in the narrows due to the sunshine we had this week. Don't let the algae discourage you I've been seeing limits of smaller Lassen trout this week not as many big ones. A lot of fishermen are switching over from dough baits to lures and are abandoning their beach plots to walk up and down the shoreline casting spinners and Rapala's in search......
