http://www.dfg.ca.gov/news/The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) has scheduled a Bear Ecology Workshop, June 2-4 at Sagehen Creek Field Station in Truckee. The weekend class is taught by Doug Updike, DFG senior wildlife biologist, and is a rare wildlife-educational opportunity.
"Whether you are a novice wildlife enthusiast or a regular visitor to bear country you will not want to miss this chance to explore the wonders of the California bear," said Lesa Johnston, coordinator for DFG.
Sagehen Creek Field Station is tucked away in the majestic Tahoe National Forest, eight miles north of Truckee, off Highway 89 north towards Sierraville at an elevation at 6,400 feet. The camp is considered remote and rustic but is clean and comfortable, has flush toilets, showers and a dining hall.
The cost for the workshop is $85 per person and includes meals and lodging in dormitory - style cabins. Participants may also pitch a personal tent if desired. Light hiking is required and participants must be at least 18 years of age.??
Topics to be covered included an overview of black bear, bear biology, bear sign, setting up monitoring cameras to document bear activity, interpreting bear activity, proper human behavior in bear country and avoiding unpleasant encounters for people and bears.
This is a great workshop for outdoor-trip leaders, outdoor enthusiasts, biology students, veterinary students, wildlife rehabilitators, educators, or anyone that loves California wildlife and has an interest in wildlife education.
