Windy weather and variety fishing marked a ten-day trip for 31 anglers.

"We got some wahoo our first day at Alijos Rocks," said Royal Polaris skipper Billy Santiago Jr. after docking the rig at Fisherman's Landing December 3.

"Then we went in to The Ridge and didn't find much. We went down to the lower banks, where we had a great day for 30 to 50-pound tuna. We fished on porpoise after that, for a while.

"When we went back up to The Ridge, we got limits of dorado, and we got daily limits of yellowtail above there at San Pablo, on bait and iron. We also had some very good rockfish below Geronimo."

Roman Gula of Toronto, Canada won first place, for a 54-pound tuna.

"It was our first stop for tuna," he said at the scales. "I got bit on a short soak, but the fish took longer to bring in than the others hooked then, so I knew it was a good one. It took about 15 minutes."

Gula said he fished a sardine on a 5/0 Mustad circle hook. He used 50-pound Izorline and 80-pound Spectra backing on an Avet LX reel and a Calstar 700 H rod.

Bob Wolfson of Dana Point was second, for a 45.3-pound tuna, and hot on his heels came Jim Motter of Arroyo Grande, who won third place for a 45.2-pound yellowfin. There were some wahoo caught that were larger, but they came on the troll and so were ineligible.
