While the billfish bonanza has slowed up just a little, the overall
averages are still holding at 3 billfish per boat day fished and the
better skippers and anglers are doing much better. The skipper of
the "Gaviota VIII", Captain Juan Dominguez, was again the high liner
for the week, producing 18 stripers released for two fishing days.
Overall fish counts for a combined 34 fishing days reflected 91
stripers, (89 released) 43 dorado and 1 mako shark. There was a
noticeable absence of yellowfin tuna this past week for the first
time in many months.
Cabo Climate: Partly cloudy days but very respectable climate
conditions, temps from 62 nights to 82 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: We're starting to see a slight decline in water
temps, currently at 74 degrees on the Golden Gate and slowly rising
to 76 at the Gorda Banks.
Best Fishing Area: Continues to be the Golden Gate Bank, but more
billfish are now being caught closer to the harbor, just off Cabo
Falso drop-0ff.
Best Bait/Lure: Live bait is still the hot ticket for the billfish,
especially the greenback mackerel, but fair numbers of stripers are
also being taken on the artificials and the macekerl colors are at
the top of the list.
Live Bait Supply: Remains good for both, caballitos and mackerel and
the mackerel can be replenished at the Golden Gate, Jaime Bank and
the Cabo Falso drop-off.
