Report Date:
http://www.kenssport.comEast Walker River
The East is running at about 95 cfs right now. With the hotter weather we’ve been having (typical August) the fishing has toughened up a bit, it’s definitely good to be down there early and late in the day and try to find something else to do during the middle of the day so the fish don’t get too stressed. There has been some good and not so good mornings and evenings lately with anglers having some success with dries as well as nymphs. Overall the fishing has been fairly tough down there with the more successful anglers reporting just 3 or 4 fish being caught during a 2 or 3 hour session. Usually around the first week in September the weather will start to change and cool down, this should help the fishing get better as we move into the Fall.
Patterns to try: Rainbow warrior, silver streak, san juan worm, squirmy wormy, micro mayflies, top secret midge, darth baetis, buckskin caddis, dark lord, copper John, LaFontaines deep sparkle pupa, z-wing caddis, Fox’s poopah, razor caddis, elk hair caddis, E/C caddis, parachute adams, blue dun, pale morning dun.
Sceirine Ranch
The Ranch is also having tougher fishing with the warmer weather like the California side. There are fish being caught, just not as many as we’d sometimes like. We did have a few anglers report that the action was very good in the morning but as the day wore on the fishing slowed a lot. As with the California side, it’s best to get out early and get a few hours in then let it rest for the day and maybe get back out in the late evening for some dry action. When the weather starts to cool down again in a couple weeks the action should get better down there as well.
Hunewill Pond
We haven’t had anyone on the pond for the last couple weeks, we’re kind of waiting on the weather to cool down a bit and when this happens the action should get better out there.
Bridgeport Reservoir
The Reservoir has slowed down quite a bit this past week, most of the reports we’ve been getting, unfortunately, haven’t been very good. Anglers are reporting catching a few perch trolling but not much on the trout lately. The water is pretty warm and the fish just don’t seem to be cooperating much lately. As with the other waters in the area as the weather hopefully cools in the next few weeks the action will get better.
Kirman Lake
We didn’t hear any news from Kirman this week but will pass on any info we get when it comes in.
Twin Lakes
It sounds like there are a few fish being caught up at the Twins lately, not really huge numbers but some good quality. We’ve also heard they are getting some good numbers of kokanee lately on the troll. Early and late in the day will be the best up there either trolling, fly fishing or bait fishing. If trolling try small Rapalas, Thomas Bouyants and Kastmasters, for bait chartreuse and garlic power bait, mice tails and night crawlers have been getting a few fish. Fly anglers can try wooly buggers, seal buggers, mini leeches, soft hackles and zug bugs.
West Walker River
The West has been a little tough lately as well, the water is pretty low and the fish have been pressured quite a bit and are difficult to catch. There has been some good fish caught with flies as well as lures and bait, just not large numbers of fish we are sometimes used to. Early and late in the day is going to be the best bet with the exception of fly fishing a hopper/dropper rig during the day which may produce some fish.
Virginia Lakes
It seems like the best reports we’ve been getting lately have been coming from the Virginias. Almost every day we’ve been seeing some of the larger fish that the BFEF and Mono County have planted up there coming in with some if them going as much as 7 pounds. Fish are being caught by bait anglers with mice tails, power bait and inflated crawlers. Lures in the early morning and late evening like Kastmasters and Thomas Bouyants can be good. Fly anglers are doing the best with seal buggers, matukas, beetles and soft hackles.
Random Information
It sounds like Mono County is done with their stocking for this season as their budget for the year has been spent. The Bridgeport Fish Enhancement has plans to stock several waters in the area towards the end of this month. The West Walker got some fish from the DFW this past week but it doesn’t look like there’s anything coming from them for our area in the near future.
