The flows on teh East are at about 200 cfs right now and the river is still fishing very well. The water temps are still in good shape and the fish are still doing very well. We did have one report from an angler who landed a nice fish and it took a minute to revive it but from all other reports it seems that they’re doing well, it’s possible this particular fish may have been recently caught by another angler and wasn’t fully recovered yet but it seems to be a fairly isolated event. Nymphing and dry fly fishing are still the best though we have had 2 or 3 good streamer reports. It’s been pretty warm here lately so mornings and evenings are the best time to be down there as the slow time is from about 11am to 5pm. We’ll keep an eye on the temperatures and fish health as there may come a time this summer when we recommend not fishing down there at all. As for now, some patterns to try: buckskin caddis, Fox’s poopah, LaFontaines deep sparkle pupa, z-wing caddis, perdigon, picky eater, darth baetis, silver streak, rainbow warrior, pheasant tail, sculpzilla, ziwi, dali lama, E/C caddis, chubby chernobyl, elk hair caddes, para adams.
Also, some food for thought, in the Fish and Wildlife Departments infinite wisdom they have decided to not make barbless hooks mandatory on the East Walker, this is absolutely going to be detrimental to the life if this amazing river in the future, if you care at all about the East Walker and its sustainability, please pinch your barbs, if everyone adheres to this practice it will help the East Walker River to keep on being a world class fishery. Thanks for your consideration.
