The Truckee River has seen the temps drop below the 68 degree mark along most sections of river with the exception of the Sparks, NV gauge which hit 69 degrees at 5:30 PM yesterday, the 22nd. As mentioned in the opening statement this could change shortly, but as for this week we are still recommending to be aware of water temps on the Truckee, Particularly on the Nevada side.
The Crawdad bite has really picked up this week with reports of some nice fish caught on these high protein meals. You may not get a ton of fish on the crawdad pattern but using one will certainly up your odds for “the one”. The other big meal is the nocturnal stonefly, given that name because of their propensity to hatch at night. They are a size 4-6 and using large brown stonefly pattens such as a Pat’s rubberlegs, or Deep Cleaner stones are good bets. For your smaller flies we’ve been fishing attractor mayfly patterns that work well to imitate both PMD’s and BWO’s. Patterns such as olive Infernogons in a size 18, Rainbow warriors in a size 16, Jigged Fauci’s in a size 16, or the classic micro mays in a 16-18. The colder weather has moved the fish around a bit and we aren’t necessarily finding fish solely in fast water any more. This is where the indicator fishing will start to become a bit more effective.
