The Metolius is fishing really well right now and will remain a favorite through the rest of the season. Nymphing has been particularly hot—consider using a double nymph rig with a golden stone or October caddis as the top fly and a smaller caddis or mayfly pattern below. You’ll want to be ready for a variety of hatches, so make sure you’ve got a solid selection of caddis, BWOs, PMDs, and a few stoneflies in your box. For those times when nymphing slows down, don’t overlook the dry fly action. A great rusty spinner hatch tends to pick up in the late afternoon and evening. Also, if you’re targeting bull trout, stripping large streamers is the way to go, and swinging leeches, sculpin, and crayfish patterns can fool some big rainbows. The Metolius is a stunning spot for a fall day, so get out there and find some fish!
