The fishing is tougher than it was back in early July, but the rainbows are still here

Current Lake Conditions:
Cold, clear, clean water sums up Baum Lake. Insect hatches have come to a stop so anglers need to fish deep with black Zebra Midges, Mercer's Gidget, sometimes a Damseleech will get a fish to relive the recent past and munch your fly. Fishing can be great mid-day when a breeze puts some texture on the water, creating broken sunlight sub-surface. That broken light makes it easier for the trout to move out of the weeds and select a fly pattern as the next meal! Suspending a black or red Zebra midge under a small indicator mid-day should produce some hook ups. Baum Lake is a good choice for August angling near Burney, Ca.

Some dry fly fishing is occurring, but the fish that eat off the surface are a little scarce. Try throwing a Griffith's Gnat or various Mayfly Cripples.

Fishing Conditions:
Fishing an Intermediate sinking line with a Damsel nymph or small PT nymph can produce a bent fly rod. The key is SLOW strips! Nothing in Baum Lake is moving fast at this time of year. The water is clear, so the fish have lots of visibility. Use lighter, longer leaders. Delicate presentations will produce more strikes. At times attractor nymphs under indicators works really well, especially where there is current. Baum Lake is an ideal fishing destination for pontoon boats, float tubes and small prams.
