"We had a mixed bag," said Carson. "We had bluefin, albacore, yellowfin and dorado. You never knew what was going to bite next. The crew was phenomenal. We tested the new Penn Torque reels and they performed flawlessly."
Jerry Reynolds of Cambria won first place for a 46.7-pound yellowfin, a fish he bagged with a sardine on a 1/0 Gamakatsu hook. He said he fished with 30-pound Maxima line, a Trinidad 30 reel and a Calstar 6460 rod. For his feat, Reynolds also won a Baja Special reel and a Pro Guide rod.
Ben Miyamoto of LA was second, for a 42.9-pound yellowfin, and Glenn Derossett of Santa Paula won third place for a 40.5-pound bluefin tuna.
