The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is offering "Dog Handling Clinic for Pointers," a basic- to intermediate-principles of training for pointing breeds of dogs. The Nov. 4 clinic runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at a private ranch in Rosamond, southern Kern County.

DFG's advanced hunter education program presents the unique clinic in partnership with Quail Unlimited. Cost is $40, and space is limited to 12 participants with dogs and 12 observers.

Professional pointing dog trainer Jim Rice will lead instructors from members of the Santa Clarita Valley Chapter of Quail Unlimited. The clinic offers guidance on how to train a "green broke" (partially trained) pointing dog into a "broke" (well-trained) dog.

As part of the clinic, instructors will evaluate each dog's experience and suggest individualized training methods. While the clinic presents a "hands-on" form of instruction, hunters who are undecided on which type of pointer to purchase should attend.

Quail Unlimited is a non-profit conservation organization dedicated to the wise use and management of America's wild quail, doves, upland game birds and other forms of wildlife.
