Lower Deschutes is fishing well, especially around Maupin, with steelhead action on the rise. Fish are moving upstream toward the Warm Springs to Trout Creek area, making now a great time to plan a float trip. Nymphing remains effective and continues to be the primary method for trout. Productive patterns include caddis pupas, stoneflies, and tungsten flies like Flashback PTs, Copper Johns, and Princes. Try a stone as your lead fly, with Perdigons like Berry’s PCP or Fire Starters as the tag fly, or use October Caddis Pupa. Euro nymphing with Perdigons and small streamers is another solid option. Steelhead are responding well to swung wet flies like the Freight Train on a floating line, and as the season progresses, it’ll be time to switch to sink tips and Skagit lines. With the first two weeks of October filling up fast, now’s the time to book your steelhead trip!
