http://www.fishingvideos.comQualifier 105 arrived at Pt. Loma Sportfishing July 7 under Brain Sims' hand. The 30 anglers aboard had a five-day trip that paid off with the biggest bluefin so far this season.
The whopper of the bunch was a 91-pound shortfin caught by Jeff Gardner of San Diego.
"My dad was on a 60-pounder," said Jeff, "and when I hooked up he said I had one just like it. Then it pulled me right over and pinned me to the rail and bent me over, so I knew it was a big one.
"I had it on an eight-foot jig stick for half and hour. It almost spooled me and then took me halfway around the boat. Then it dogged me straight up and down."
The jackpot was a father-son sweep by Jeff and his dad Don Gardner. Don's 64-pounder won second place. John Okita of Las Vegas was third, for a 60.4-pound bluefin.
