The Truckee is still a good bet, but cooling weather means that your fishing methods must change. The key to catching fish is to fish slower, deeper water as the fish will move to these areas due to cooling water temperatures. Overcast afternoons have been the best days to fish as there is typically a short Blue Winged Olive mayfly hatch that will bring fish to the surface. If the conditions are not overcast there will not be much in the way of dry fly fishing. Dead drifting small mayfly and midge pupa patterns or fishing streamers slow and deep are the best methods with the current conditions. A sink-tip line or sinking leader rig will help get your streamer down in front of the big ones. The best fly patterns have been; Andy's Two-Tone Hunchback nymph 18-20, Copper Johns 16-20, Zebra Midges, Pheasant Tail Nymph 14-20, Gold Ribbed Hares Ear 14-18, BH Prince 14-18, Flu Shots, Stanley Streamers 6, and BH Crystal Buggers 6-10.

NOTE: The Truckee is also open in California from the confluence of Trout Creek below Truckee all the way to the Nevada border. This is a special regulation season with barbless hook no bait regulations. The Limit is ZERO trout, all fish must be released back to the river.
